What do you mean by Upgrade? You older iMac is likely to be running the most current version of AW aready. That version will run fine on your new iMac. Apple didn't (and almost certainly won't) upgrade AW for intel macs. Just remember to erase AW off you older iMac if you install it on the new one. You are only licensed for one machine at a time.

CaptfredI've got an obsolete ol' eMac running Mac OSX 1.3.9, as I never upgraded to Tiger. Well now that Leopard's come along, I figure I might as well go for it. However, my eMac's only got 512MB of memory and I'd need to spend like $100 or more on 1GB of memory alone just to run Leopard. On top of that, I need another external hard drive, and my eMac's fan is loud (though I guess there's nothing wrong with it exactly, it's just being loud and weird).
All that said, would it be worth it to even bother upgrading my eMac and everything, or should I just get a new iMac? I mean eMac's are already obsolete as it is, and it'd be a waste of money if I upgraded it now and in a year or so just ended up having to buy a new computer for some reason anyway (such as if this one dies, like if the wack fan leads to it's demise or something)...Obsolete! Older, yes. No longer sold, yes, but gosh dag nabbit, my old eMac is still my primary machine and does the job very well with everything I need it to do (video editing, iTunes, iPod, etc.). That said, I have been drooling over the new iMacs lately, but this eMac still has a lot of life left in it.
But back to your eMac. First thing I would do is invest in a nice external hard drive if you do not have one. Get one that can be connected via Firewire so you can take advantage of Firewire speed if your eMac is an older model without USB2 ports. Then back up everything important to that external.
An external is not a bad investment at all, even for an old machine, because it can go with you when you upgrade so there is no risk of 'leaving it behind' if the eMac dies. If and when you get a new iMac, the drive can simple be moved to that machine and you keep using it. So regardless of which way you go, keep the eMac or move to an iMac, the external hard drive is still a great idea to protect your irreplaceable data (family digital photos, home videos, etc.).
As to the eMac, if you wanted to upgrade the operating system, I would look into getting a copy of Tiger. It is a nice upgrade to Panther (10.3.9) and with Leopard (10.5) out, will should start to see copies of Tiger for very affordable prices. While more would be better, under Tiger, you can probably do fine with the 512MB RAM you have now if you don't do any sort of heavy processing.
So like the others, a new iMac would be fantastic and you wouldn't regret it. But if you want to stick with the eMac for a bit more, get the external hard drive anyway as you will want it to backup even if you get the iMac. Now either continue to use the eMac as is (10.3.9 & 512MB) or find a cheap copy of Tiger and upgrade to that and stick with the same RAM and just turn off some of the memory hogging eye candy in Tiger like the Widgets. I bet if you looked around you might be able to find Tiger for $50-ish so your total upgrade cost is $50 (the external hard drive I don't count since it will go with you to the iMac).
PatrickI just replaced my iMac G5 (running Tiger) with a new Intel-based iMac (also running Tiger). The G5 came with Appleworks bundled; the new one did not. I'm reasonably sure that it is legal for me to install Appleworks on the new iMac (as long as I remove it from the old one); I just don't know how. It won't allow me to install from the install/restore CDs that came with the G5. Can I just copy the Appleworks (US English) folder to the Applications folder on the new machine?

You should be able to do just that, yes, using firewire. Try just dragging & dropping from 1 computer to the other, if that fails:
Shut down both computers
Connect computers using 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable.
Boot up Intel iMac normally.
Boot up G5 holding down T until firewire symbol appears on screen.
Navigate to HD/Applications on Intel.
Navigate to HD/Applications on G5.
Put windows side-by-side.
Drag & drop Appleworks folder into Intel's Applications folder.
Eject G5's disk icon & shutdown G5.
Shut down Intel.
Disconnect wire.
One more thing, make sure it's Appleworks 6.2.4 or above.
SteveI have a new iMac 24; came with Leopard. I have spent a week trying to upgrade to SL. The problem is that every time it boots after the upgrade I get only to the spinning wheel at startup (not beachball, but the gear-looking thingy) and it just hangs there permanently. (I had 10.5.8 on previous, fully updated.) I am using an upgrade DVD.
After countless hours, I have narrowed it down somewhat. I can get it to boot after a clean install, but after using the Migration assistant it once again goes into its death mode. I have narrowed down the problem to the 'Applications' migration; i.e., I can install SL, migrate Users, prefs, docs, and then I can reboot under SL no problem. But if I migrate Applications, it boots with the permanent spinning wheel.
So now my goal is to figure out exactly which file(s) is causing this problem. I am looking through the log files but there are a lot of them and I'm not exactly sure where I should look. (I copied some log files via Terminal to another drive while starting up from the DVD.)

BUT according to an email from apple customers who have biought an apple machine during this period can upgrade to this OS X Lion for free. BUT WHERE? At work, as a graphic designer, I use a 5 year old G5 on OS 10.5.8. I am about to upgrade to a brand new iMac and was wondering what the best way would be to go about transferring files/software from the G5 to the iMac.
I have been advised to use Migration Assistant but have no experience of using this software whatsoever, so would appreciate any advice or tips.
At the moment the G5 has a number of accounts set up on it. One is mine, the other is an old account belonging to the last designer I replaced, and one is an account set up by our IT department even though they never use the mac. Ideally I'd like to just have one account for the iMac to stop any confusion or problems (when I replaced the old designer my new account was set up for me by the IT dept and I've had non-stop problems with file permissions/authentification etc ever since).
Will MA get rid of the permission problems I've been having? Do I need to transfer all accounts?
Does MA transfer settings and password info, or will this need to be recorded and re-entered manually?
Would I be better off just transferring everything manually?
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!
Thanks.Remove the unwanted accounts from System Preferences > Accounts. Unlock the prefs by clicking the lock at the bottom and authenticating with your admin password. Select the account to delete and click the minus sign at the bottom of the window. You may be asked if you want to preserve the data or completely delete; choose the complete deletion. Do that for both surplus accounts.
BTW, you can only do this if you're logged in as admin user yourself.
When you're happy that you've got rid of all the extraneous stuff, don't use MA. On first boot of the new Mac you'll be offered the option to transfer files from another source (this is Setup Assistant). Connect the two by firewire and choose 'from another Mac'. Continue with the initial setup as prompted.
Note that transferring all your stuff may take quite a long time (hours).
Using Setup Assistant at first boot ensures you get one account with all the correct permissions.
Using Migration Assistant after creating an account can lead to serious permissions problems, duplicated data and other problems.Brand new iMac.

You can copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications on the eMac to the new Mac. Make sure it is the whole folder, not just the AppleWorks 6.app. Do not move any preference files except the Button Bar Preferences (if you have customized the Button Bar). To remain within the Apple single-user license, remove the copy from the old Mac. I recommend copying the folder to a CD so that you will have it for a backup should you ever need to reinstall it.
i used time machine to reinstall all products on a new imac machine. everything seems to be installed but when i open aperture it asks for my serial # and when i put it in it says that is your upgrade serial.. we want the original serial #. that box is long gone, how do i find that serial #

I read a link with guidleines to upgrade to lion. My question is:
After upgrading to lion, I am going to buy a new imac and want to move to the new imac with the least inconvenience. I have a lot of music app/usb interfaces so the time to reconfigure everything would be very time consuming.
So is the 'safe' way to do it?

Get everything working again on the current imac with mountain lion.
Do a time machine backup of the lion configuration.
Get the new imac and on first boot, elect to restore from the time machine backup wiping out what came installed on the new imac.

thanks in advance.There is really no need to update the older iMac running 10.6 to Lion, especially if you have multiple backups of your User Data. You can easliy move or migrate data from any one of your External HDs or Server to the new iMac.
As for your current iMac:
If you plan on selling the older iMac, Lion is not transferable and you will want to sell it with a clean install of 10.6 and let the new owner upgrade.
If you plan on keeping the older iMac around for others to use and it supports Mountain Lion, then in my humble opinion Mountain Lion is the better upgrade.
As for your other devices:

I just bought the new iMac 2011, I would like to upgrade the RAM, the HDD and add an SSD in the future, without doubt. Does this mean that, in order to do so, and remain within warranty, I am going to have to bring my iMac to an Apple Store, buy the parts directly from them, and pay for labour?

The hard drive is another matter. iMacs are HIGHLY compact desktop computers. Gaining access to the hard drive requires removing the LCD and the glass that covers it. While one could do this in theory, and perhaps not damage any components in the process (which is what voids the warranty), I wouldn't risk it.

Personally, I'd buy a computer with an HD that meets my needs and use external drives as needed as they are very reasonably priced these days. Its not like you're gonna be carrying the iMac around . Or maybe you are? 27' portable?
Once the 3 years are up (if you keep the computer that long) you can start cracking it open if you like. Though frankly there may something even better out by then. Having the AppleCare ups the re-sale value so you could sell the old system online and buy something new.
